True Wisdom Takes Real Courage

I’ve just come across the thoughts of Roger Kenneth Marsh, founder of “Major Good Mojo“. Here is some of his wisdom:

As a wise and conscious person I bet you can guess what is underlying the “take no prisoners” attitude about business. Yep, that’s right, fear. We are afraid that if we don’t MAKE THINGS HAPPEN AND CONTROL EVERYTHING, that everything will go to hell in a hand basket and everyone, including us, will be screwed. AKA “out of business, broke and on the streets, a loser in the world.” Right? We are afraid of that happening so we get very busy, trying to dominate and control everything.

Parker J. Palmer wrote a fabulous little book called Let Your Life Speak. At one point in this book he outlines what he calls the “shadows of leadership,” negative concepts or beliefs that we hold that can block us or render our path almost impassable. Examples are insecurity about identity and worth, the belief that the universe is hostile, and fear of the chaos of life. These are some of negative concepts that can block us. I’ve seen and experienced them in myself and seen them in others. But there was another that Palmer described, called “Functional Atheism.” This is a BELIEF that ultimate responsibility for everything rests with us.

Palmer states:

“This is the unconscious, unexamined conviction that if anything decent is going to happen here, we are the ones who must make it happen. This belief leads us to impose our will on others, stressing our relationships, sometimes to the point of breaking. It often eventuates in burnout, depression, and despair, as we learn that the world will not bend to our will and we become embittered about that fact. It drives collective frenzy as well and explains why the average group can tolerate no more than fifteen seconds of silence: if we are not making noise, we believe, nothing good is happening and something must be dying.”

Wow. And ouch. This need for control stems from fear and underneath that fear there is distrust. Or said another way, a lack of trust, and this lack of trust is ultimately in the Universe itself. Can you see that? We don’t trust the Universe, therefore we are afraid. Because we fear things are not going to turn out, we must dominate them and force them and control them in a mad frenzy. What fun. I have a friend, who, after regaling me with the troubles and stressors in her life, wailed, “Oh, if I could just get CONTROL, then I could RELAX!” When she realized what she had said, we both burst out laughing.

So where did this distrust come from? Why do we have this underlying lack of trust in the Universe? Is it founded on good data? Do we distrust the Universe to beat our hearts for us? Do we distrust the Universe to provide us air to breathe? Do we have to make the sun rise each day? Do we have to create gravity each day so we don’t fly off the planet into space? Do we have to make the rain fall so we don’t die of thirst? ALL of life is ultimately a partnership with life itself. Even making money, making products, delivering services, any project or activity you can think of, is actually a partnership with life, with the Universe.

Fundamentally any effort-filled, forceful, tiring, stressful struggle is based in ignorance. It’s a lack of awareness of life energy itself. It’s based in fear (that the results will not happen), distrust (the Universe will not provide), attachment (that if the results I want don’t happen then bad things WILL happen), and separation (I’m the only one who can make this happen – just little ole’ me who must shoulder this burden). Fear, distrust, attachment, and separation…hmmm. We can start to see why there is skepticism and cynicism when it comes to bringing Wisdom alive in the workplace, and why a fair amount of courage will be required to bring it about.

The truth is you DO have a role, and effort is required, it’s just that it’s not ALL about you. What I’m talking about is awareness and partnership. It is about maximizing and optimizing your role and the role of the Universe. It’s a dance, a dance in awareness that you are part of something far larger than your self (small “s”). The truly wise person will partner with that something else, TRUST it and work with it to maximize the experience of being alive, (and yes, this is a practice that is engaged day-in and day-out, over time). Ultimately, you can maximize the results you have been inspired to create, even bottom-line business success.

There IS room for wisdom, compassion, mindfulness, presence, joy, trust, and even love in business. Frankly, these are all traits or characteristics of a spiritually grounded and connected person. Or instead of using the word spiritual (since business does not like that word) you could say awake, alive, and fully integrated human being. This is what is missing in most corporations today. There is a HUGE opportunity not only for each of us as individuals, but also for corporations in this. And it’s up to us to bring it alive.

Our lives are so full of stuff. Not just material physical stuff, but sound and noise as well. How often during our days do we get to really experience a powerful silence?

Parker J. Palmer said the average group of people can tolerate no more than 15 seconds of silence. 15 seconds! This is how long most people can be quiet before someone feels compelled to “make some noise” and say something. He points out the belief that if we aren’t making noise then NOTHING is happening and likely something is even dying. So we get busy and fill the void with noise.

There’s a kind of discomfort that arises in silence, especially in groups – I’m sure you’ve experienced it, I know I have. We even have a name for it, “the uncomfortable silence,” as in “an uncomfortable silence fell over the room.” But we also have another term, “the pregnant pause,” that is pointing more toward what I’m talking about here: there is something in the silence that wants to be born.

Close your eyes, take a slow deep breath, and give yourself the gift of 60 seconds of silence and just notice what you notice. Relax into the arms of the Universe and make some space for GRACE.

Brian Tracy’s 7 Disciplines for Success.

Here is some great advice from Brian Tracy about how to function more effectively every day with a little planning and focus.

Brian says:

“There are 7 disciplines you must develop if you want to achieve all that is possible for you. You can learn these disciplines through practice and repetition until they become automatic.
Goal Setting Every morning, take 3 to 5 minutes to write out your top goals in the present tense. Get a spiral notebook for this purpose. By writing out your 10 goals at the beginning of each day, you will program them deep into your subconscious mind.
This daily goal writing will activate your mental powers. It will stimulate your mind and make you more alert. Throughout the day, you will see opportunities and possibilities to move more rapidly toward your goals.
Planning and Organizing Take a few minutes, preferably the night before, to plan out every activity of the coming day. Always work from a list. Always think on paper. This is one of the most powerful and important disciplines of all for high performance.
Priority Setting The essence of all time management, personal management, and life management is contained in your ability to set proper priorities and use of your time. This is essential for high performance.
Concentration on your Highest-Value Activities Your ability to work single-mindedly on your most important task will contribute as much to your success as any other discipline you can develop.
Exercise and Proper Nutrition Your health is more important than anything else. By disciplining yourself to exercise regularly and to eat carefully, you will promote the highest possible levels of health and fitness throughout your life.
Learning and Growth Your mind is like a muscle. If you don’t use it, you lose it. Continuous learning is the minimum requirement for success in any field.
Time for Important People in your Life Relationships are everything. Be sure that in climbing the ladder of success, you do not find it leaning against the wrong building. Make time for your relationships every day, no matter how busy you get.
Action Exercise These 7 disciplines will ensure that you perform at the highest level and get the greatest satisfaction and results from everything you do. Study these 7 disciplines and then make a plan for how you can incorporate each of them into your daily life.”

Dear Aline,

The great difference between high achievement and failure in life is contained in your willingness to launch in the direction of your goal, even when your information is incomplete.
Read that last line again… ‘even when your information is incomplete.’
A thousand dreams die unborn every day because the dreamer lacks the courage to take the FIRST STEP, in faith, with no guarantees of success.
There are no guarantees in life, and we know that if every question must be answered, if every obstacle must first be overcome—then NOTHING will ever get done.
Decide what you want, write it down, make a plan, and then—take action.

Have You Checked Your Self-Talk Recently?

Did you know that you talk to yourself all day long?  No, not the mental chatter about activities and chores that you need to remember throughout the day.  That’s a form of self-talk too, but I’m referring more to the things you say to yourself on a regular basis; and more importantly, the tone in which you say them.
When you make a mistake, do you berate yourself angrily?  Do you put yourself down or
call yourself derogatory names?  When you have a hard time making positive changes in your life, do you bemoan what a “useless” person you are and conclude that you’ll never do anything right?
Negative self-talk can be incredibly damaging to your self-esteem, especially if it’s a big part of your daily life.  When you keep saying things like that to yourself, eventually you begin to believe them!
Quite often these messages began as statements uttered by the adults in your life when you were a child. They may have said something negative about you when your actions
displeased them, or perhaps they had a habit of saying unkind things even when
you didn’t deserve it.  As painful as these experiences can be, even worse is when you pick up where they left off and keep repeating the same negative messages to yourself over and over.

The good news is that you can change your self-talk any time you want.  The key is awareness. You have to know how to become aware of the tone of your messages and then consciously and deliberately replace them with more encouraging ones.
So, your single step towards changing your negative self-talk is to pay attention to what you are telling yourself every day. Try following these THREE steps. (Yes, I know, that’s
not Just A Single Step! But it’s important to be flexible in all of this too!)
1)            Develop awareness of your self-talk.  It may take practice, but if you keep “listening” in to your inner voice, you’ll begin to notice when you talk negatively to yourself.
2)            Challenge the negative messages.  When you notice yourself saying something negative such as, “You’re such an idiot, you can’t do anything right” – stop yourself and challenge that belief.  Is that really true?  Maybe you mess up sometimes, but do you ALWAYS mess up?  Probably not.
3)            Replace the negative messages with positive messages.
When you realize you’re saying unkind and untrue things to yourself, simply turn it around in your mind. Using the above example, you might say, “Wow, that’s not true at
all!  I do plenty of things right.  It’s true I make mistakes, but so does everyone.  I’m a good person and I’m doing my best.  That’s good enough for me.”
Over time, your efforts will pay off in the form of stronger self-esteem and respect for yourself and your capabilities.  It won’t happen overnight; you’ve been in the
habit of telling yourself these negative messages for a long time. But the more
you work at turning your self-talk in a more positive direction, the better
you’ll feel about yourself.

And remember, it takes about 30 days practice to change a habit, so don’t give up!

Happy New Year!

And whether you choose to call it “twenty twelve” or “two thousand and twelve” I hope it will be a very successful year for you. Now that’s quite a broad statement, as success means different things to different people. You may be focused on your job or career path; perhaps it’s time for a change? Or is fear of losing what you already have holding you back? It’s true we live in challenging times, and if you pay a lot of attention to the negative vision perpetuated by the media, you can very quickly be dragged into feelings of fear and worry. All the “what ifs” start to populate your mind and pretty soon you find that any new idea you may have is quickly shot down by your ever so logical mind.

So what can you do about it? Well, the single step to take at this point is to become aware of when you are sabotaging what your intuitive self is telling you. Because your inner guide or intuition is always acting in your best interests, it’s just a question of tuning in to the messages and then taking action on them. But that is easier said than done. It’s sometimes hard to know where to begin. Personally I have found Jack Canfield‘s book, The Success Principles. How to get from where you are to where you want to be, invaluable.

It contains no fewer than 64 timeless principles which have been used by successful men and women throughout history. If you practise these principles daily, they will help you bring about the changes you need to make in order to achieve any goal you wish.

Now you do have to put in the effort. It’s not just a question of read the book and somehow all these changes will happen automagically. (I just love that word, I wish I had made it up!) In fact it has been proved that in order to, in a sense, install a new habit as part of the changes you choose to make in your life, you need to deliberately do whatever action is necessary for an uninterrupted period of 30 days. That’s how long it takes for new neural pathways to be created in your brain.

The experiment that first showed this was when NASA wanted to find out what would be the long term effects of disorientation on the human brain, mind and body. So they had their astronauts wear goggles with convex lenses, so that everything they saw appeared to be upside down. They had to wear the goggles all the time and try to function normally, even though their world appeared to have been turned upside down! NASA wanted to see if there would be any experience of nausea, balance difficulties, change in blood pressure etcetera.

But after about 30 days, something totally unexpected happened. One by one, the astronauts began reporting that they could see the right way up again, even though they were wearing the goggles! Their brains were rewiring and adjusting to the view. They had flipped their vision back the right way up.

I’m not suggesting you try to imitate the experiment, but it does give us valuable insight into the power of the brain and its ability to change.

It takes persistence – about 30 days worth as we have seen -  to delete old, counter-productive habits and install new ones. A simple way to begin is to pay attention to your self-talk. Just listen to how your internal dialogue goes during the day. Are most of the things you tell yourself positive or negative? Apparently about 75% of our self-talk is negative and only 25% positive, which could explain why we keep on sabotaging our wish to change! Make this something you change by only giving positive, supporting thoughts space in your head. And it could be the beginning of great things for you in 2012.
